Despite the political environment of late in Hong Kong, technology recruitment market remained active in Q3 2019.
After Microsoft announced that it will officially begin the Windows 7 end of life phase in Jan 2020 - stop supporting Windows 7 and no longer offer any security updates. Many corporations across industries are ramping up there resources to support their Windows 10 migration. This has led to a huge demand for Windows 10 Migration Engineers as well as Desktop Support Engineers. Driven by higher demand, candidates are also expecting better compensation and benefits.
In addition, there is also a rising demand of Data Scientist related positions in Hong Kong. Many companies are set to boost their data analytics capabilities and this is not restricted only to financial industries. Realising the challenge of a rather limited talent pool, they are actually willing to provide training to junior candidates who have strong academic background from Computer Science, Statistics or skill set such as programming, etc. ETL (Extract Transfer Load), Python, R, SAS. While we are stepping into Q4, the holiday and bonus season, we anticipate that the strong momentum of Q3 will carry on.
Over the last few months, we can see a steady increase in demand for Network related positions. This is true for Network Engineers, Architects and Network Security related positions. At the same time, Software developers with Python and Scala skill sets were mostly sought after. There is a stable demand for service related roles, such as Desktop and Deskside support – surprisingly, a solid number of AVP and VP roles across the market.
Technically we can see a big shift towards virtualization and cloud based solutions based on AWS, Azure as well as GCP. There is an uptrend of migration projects, mostly of V2V and P2V.
In the talent market, there is a significant growing appetite for permanent positions. Candidates generally would not consider contracting positions with less than 12 months contract period. One factor that we found to be crucial while hiring top talents is the hiring time. Some recruitment processes take longer than others, which is normal across the market. However, with fierce competition for IT talent, candidates can easily have more than one offer. Companies that can select and onboard candidates quickly are definitely having an advantage in securing the best talents and avoid disappointing dropout cases. Being able to select quickly and make an offer, highly increases the success of hiring top talents.
The market in Q3 remained buoyant in particular with continuous requirements for strong Java Developers and Network Engineers.
